Dr.
Bruce was born in Lynchburg and grew up in Virginia
and Utah. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1982
with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation
he worked for Westinghouse Defense and Sperry Marine,
earning a M.S. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
from the University of Virginia in 1992. The following
fall he returned to Virginia Tech to attend the College
of Veterinary Medicine, received his doctorate in
1996, and opened Read Mountain Animal Hospital in
1999. Dr. Bruce lives in Botetourt County with Anna,
his hospital manager and wife of over 20 years, their
son Iain, and dogs Kodi and Puck.
The cat in this picture was named Tortie. She was
a clinic pet, client greeter, and blood donor cat
for many years before retiring in 1997. She died in
1999 of complications from hyperthyroidism and cancer,
having saved the lives of many cats in her long life.

Anna
was born and raised in Tidewater
Virginia,
but often visited Roanoke as a child. She graduated
from Radford University in 1982 with a B. S. in History
and worked as an archaeologist at several locations
in the Mid-Atlantic states. She earned an A.A.S. in
Veterinary Technology from Blue Ridge Community College
in 2003 and became licensed as a Veterinary Technician
the same year. Anna is the hospital manager and head
technician.
The dog with Anna is Polaris, the first of the Bruces'
Alaskan Malamutes. He also participated in veterinary
medicine, donating blood through the Companion Animal
Blood Bank at Virginia Tech. He enjoyed showing in
the obedience ring, earning his AKC Companion Dog
certification in 1989. He died in 1996 of bone cancer.

Millie
and her husband, Al, live with their newly adopted
bunny - Sunny, and cat - Simon. They moved from Ohio
in 2004 to be closer to their daughter who transferred
with her job from Cleveland to Roanoke. They fell
in love with the area and began their plans to retire
and relocate. Millie spent 23 years with the Girl
Scouts of Erie Shores, a council in Lorain. She started
as a part-time typist, became the Program Registrar,
and ended her career as the Administrative Assistant
to the Executive Director. Millie enjoys her job at
Read Mountain and continues to learn about the field
of veterinary medicine. You will often see her with
the office cat, Tobias, sitting on her lap while she
answers the phone, schedules appointments, educates
clients, and keeps patient charts current.
