In September of 1998, Dr. David Bruce and his wife Anna purchased the old Dove Orchards manager's cottage. Their goal was to transform this drab gray cottage into a bright, warm and welcoming small animal hospital. With the help of their son, Iain, the Bruces spent every weekend cleaning up the property before construction began. When the clean up was finished, 2 tons of garbage was hauled away. The renovation and construction of the addition took several months. During that time, Dr. Bruce continued to work in Martinsville while Anna supervised the renovation and construction of the addition. The Read Mountain Animal Hospital opened April 21, 1999 and hosted its first Open House on June 12, 1999.
